On the banks of the River Farma, between Monticiano and Civitella Paganico, hot sulphurous water has been rising from the ground for centuries. The springs of Petriolo are a nature experience off the beaten track.
Nature and history
The thermal water emerges from the spring at around 43 °C and flows in small cascades over the rocks down to the river. The springs were already used in antiquity and the Middle Ages; remains of old fortifications and historic bath buildings bear witness to this.
The surroundings are wooded and quiet – the Farma valley is a protected nature area.
Free pools and spa facilities
There are two options: on the riverbank you will find freely accessible natural pools where the hot water mixes with the river – no admission fee, but no facilities either. Next to them is a commercial spa whose pools can be used for a fee.

Our tip
Set off early or come on a weekday – the free pools are quietest then. Bring water shoes, a towel, drinking water and something to eat.
Good to know
- The free pools have no lifeguard, changing rooms or toilets. The rocks are slippery – water shoes are highly recommended.
- The water is hot: don't stay in too long, drink enough, and if in doubt avoid bathing with heart or circulation problems, during pregnancy or with small children.
- The sulphur has a strong smell and can tarnish silver – take off your jewellery.
- After heavy rain the Farma can run high; do not bathe in the river then. Please check current access and conditions before your visit.
- Please take your rubbish home with you.
