Surrounded by cypresses and vineyards, the abbey of San Michele Arcangelo a Passignano is one of the most striking sights in Chianti – and only a short distance from Le Rondini.

Religious and cultural history

In the 11th century the abbey passed to the Vallombrosan order founded by Saint John Gualbert, who is buried here. The refectory holds a Last Supper fresco by the brothers Domenico and Davide Ghirlandaio.

At the end of the 16th century the young Galileo Galilei taught mathematics here. Today a small community of monks lives in the abbey once again.

Landscape and walking trails

Vineyards and olive groves surround the abbey. Lovely paths lead through the hills – a walk in the evening light is one of the most peaceful experiences in the area.
