Radda sits on a ridge between the Pesa and Arbia valleys – a compact medieval village surrounded by some of the most beautiful wine country in Chianti.
Capital of the Chianti League
In the Middle Ages Radda was the capital of the Lega del Chianti, an alliance of Radda, Castellina and Gaiole under Florentine rule. On the Palazzo del Podestà, numerous coats of arms recall the officials of the past.
Parts of the town walls survive, and the narrow lanes invite you to wander.
Vineyards and olive groves
Vineyards, olive groves and woods surround Radda. Many estates open their cellars for visits and tastings. Nearby is Volpaia, a small fortified village well worth a detour.
